I’m sure you’ve heard of the Alkaline diet before. If you haven’t, it’s the belief that there are “bad” foods that create toxic acids in the body, which can be harmful, leading to diabetes, kidney damage, and weight gain. There are also “good” alkalizing foods that help detoxify the body. It’s been called a fad diet but now researchers are noticing there might definitely be something to learn from this fad.
When speaking of alkaline versus acidic foods, we’re referring to the affect foods can have on our internal pH balance. Human blood pH should be slightly alkaline (7.35-7.45). Below or above this range means symptoms and disease. A pH of 7.0 is neutral. A pH below 7.0 is acidic and a pH above 7.0 is alkaline.
Our blood can become acidic from an acid forming diet, emotional stress, toxic overload, and/or immune reactions (AKA when you get sick). Your body does an amazing job of trying to compensate for the acidic pH by using alkaline minerals you have stored in the body. However, if you are deficient in any of these minerals, a build up of acids in the cells will occur.
When your body is in an acidic environment you have a decreased ability to absorb nutrients and minerals in the diet. An acidic environment will also decrease your cells ability to repair themselves, decrease the energy production of cells, decrease your ability to detoxify heavy metals, make tumor cells thrive, and make you more susceptible to fatigue and illness. The acid environment can also change hormones in your body, which can lead to diabetes.
